Indigo Dreams

"It became my job to calm and settle this group of high vibration
indigo, crystal, and psychic children."

Was the soft-spoken man who just lowered his body temperature announcing that I was to be a teacher? I was a poster child for stress with ongoing symptoms of weight loss, acute gastritis, chronic fatigue and involuntary breath holding. I was at this class seeking spiritual enlightenment and hoping to lower my anxiety levels, but me a teacher? I couldn’t even get my own child to drift off to sleep in less than 2 hours. Surely, I could quietly blend in with the other adults at this meditation class after the introductions. I introduced myself as Lori Lite and somehow in that moment this raja yoga guru saw a teacher in me.

I was reminiscing about the day my meditation instructor called me a teacher as I was summoned to the children's room. The leaders at the spiritual conference I was attending heard that I was in the house. As an author of four relaxation/meditation books and CDs for children, I was to be their “rescue reader.” It became my job to calm and settle this group of high vibration indigo, crystal, and psychic children. I was warned with a patronizing good luck pat on the back and told not to expect much.

These energized, highly evolved children had been running wild for hours and had their own ideas on how to spend their time. Assessing the needs of the group, I clapped my hands to get their attention and ground their chaotic energy. Next, I matched the energy of the children by hopping like a rabbit and inviting them to follow me parade style. I quickly reevaluated my original intention of reading “A Boy and a Bear” to teach them how to belly breathe. Instead, I began to conduct a class.

I had worked with individuals and small groups of children in the comfort of my home and in Yoga studios where the children were expecting to following directions. I had never attempted to surprise such a high energy group with an impromptu class before. The children enthusiastically took turns sharing their fears of spiders, meeting new people and nightmares. We popped imaginary bubbles as we sang and stomped our fears away. Laughing and bonding, the group chanted. "Let's do it again, let’s do it again!" The adult volunteers in the room, exhausted from supervising the children were amazed at the level of participation and cooperation. They watched as we crawled past them using our turtle energy to get to the story time corner. Now I was able to successfully read "A Boy and a Turtle.” The children listened intently as they learned to visualize by filling their bodies with the colors of the rainbow. Many of them fell asleep.

The children’s own intense, runaway energy had drained them. They desperately wanted a way to calm their minds and bodies. In one session, they all learned to identify their own energy as they shifted from rabbit energy to turtle energy. They all worked with color to feel calm and centered while intuitively balancing their chakras. They got it and they loved it!

The volunteers approached me, "How did I do that? Can I teach them? Do I have a curriculum?" Teaching came naturally for me, but I had never thought about writing my lessons on paper. The adults and the children were asking me for a curriculum. The angels whispered in my ear "empower, encourage, evolve!" I was inspired to create a curriculum so that other lightworkers, teachers, healers and parents could have a format in which to teach the children how to harness and manage their own energy.

Building lessons around the stories on my "Indigo Dreams" CD I began to create a turnkey curriculum kit that anyone could work with regardless of their experience. In that moment, "The Children's Awareness Curriculum" was born and I stepped fully into my role as a teacher. I had become a bridge between the adults and the children. The curriculum would connect the mainstream and new age communities presenting seemingly intangible concepts in a grounded non-threatening manner. Children could now learn life-transforming concepts in a safe, fun, interactive environment. They would become active participants in creating their own healthy, heart driven, peaceful lives. This was how I would create a meditation/relaxation curriculum for children and be in service to my higher purpose.

The age-old practice of meditation has experienced a resurgence. Through his association with the Beatles the Maharishi Mahesh Yogi connected with the rock and roll crowd thirty years ago by bringing non-religious transcendental meditation to the western world. Today, Oprah has empowered millions by exposing her viewers to many self-management tools including meditation, visualizations and affirmations. Actor, Richard Gere and his alliance with the Dalai Lama has elevated Buddhism to celebrity status. Even Madonna has achieved personal transformation and enlightenment with the help of her private yoga instructor and Kabalah studies. The Eastern way of achieving wellness, tranquility and serenity has entered mainstream America.

Today’s children are vibrating on higher levels than ever before. Their unharnessed energy has many parents, educators and doctors considering the path of Ritalin and other drugs. Our children are making their way in a world that has dramatically changed. Children are spending extended time in school and structured settings such as daycare. Our children, with their fast processing, multi-dimensional minds are expected to sit still and be excited by methods of teaching that need updating. The media has bombarded our children with complicated and often traumatizing information. Millions of our sensitive and intuitive children feel the pain and trauma of 9/11 and the Tsunami. Many struggle with anxiety, fear, depression and hyperactivity.

Yet, these are the very children we are expecting to transform the planet. It is hard to imagine anyone struggling with negative emotions and imbalances creating a global shift. Our youth need to feel safe, calm, loved, balanced, clear and connected. It is up to us to give them guidance and offer them the tools they need to become the leaders of the new world.

During one of my experiences with a group of high vibration children, I encountered a beautiful, big-eyed child who was trying to establish herself as a leader. Her chaotic, loud energy was out of control. I observed as her peers, a group of indigo, crystal and psychic children ostracized her. With non-verbal communication they energetically ignored her. The child became frustrated and began to act out, pushing the group even further away. I was amazed to see these gifted children act in such a surprisingly uncompassionate way. I could not help but wonder how this situation could have played out differently if she could harness her energy. How can a leader have followers unless they can create a calm, trusting environment while displaying socially acceptable behavior? We must teach today’s children to manage their own energy so that they can focus it on carving a new path where others will want to follow.

Many Montessori schools are encouraging children’s unique gifts while guiding them to be confident leaders. The I Am Foundation is gifting children with books and music designed to empower our youth. These schools and organizations are incorporating "The Children's Awareness Curriculum" into their programs. These aware, intuitive teachers are responding to the needs of today’s children by showing them how to integrate meditation and self-management techniques into their lives.

Reports from children who have worked with meditation have shown that they are happier, more alert and less frustrated. My own students have told me that they “feel calm and focused.” A few deep breaths and a few minutes of visualizing had a teenage boy saying, “I never felt anything like this in my entire life.” This boy went on to improve his hockey game using visualization techniques. I asked another student of mine when he thought he could use these techniques. With innate wisdom, he stated, “when someone at school bothers me I could take a deep breath to calm down instead of hitting him.” I witnessed a seven-year-old girl on the playground asking her friends to hold their hands over a scrape on her knee to “help it heal.” My own son sat next to a screaming child on the bus to “give him some good energy”.

Imagine a generation of children that know how to calm and center themselves as they collect their energy and direct it in a way that helps them, others and the world. Imagine teachers introducing their students to the life transforming techniques of breathing, visualizations, affirmations and meditation. Imagine how these concepts could revolutionize the educational system and a generation of children.
